Except for the national holiday (German Unity Day), 2011 public holidays in Germany (gesetzliche Feiertage) are determined by the federal states.
Public holidays in Germany vary from one federal state to another with some states having more public holidays than others. In Berlin, for example, there are nine public holidays per year, whereas certain federal states, such as Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria, celebrate up to five more days.

Either Carnival Monday (“Rose Monday”) or Mardi Gras is a de facto holiday in some towns and cities in Catholic western and southern Germany which have a strong Carnival tradition. The Three Kings Day, better known as Epiphany, is 6 January, the day after the 12 days of Christmas.
