Tunarama Festival 2013
One of the oldest and oddest festivals in Australia, Tunarama Festival, is held in January along with the Australia Day. Tuna Toss competition which obliges the participants to toss heavy tunas – about 8 until 10 kilograms – as far as possible becomes the main attraction in this festival. The farthest tosser of the tuna becomes the winner and receives prize money up to 7,000 AUD.

Tunarama Festival 2013 Celebration

In the beginning, Tunarama festival was held to celebrate the Australia Day by the villagers near Boston Bay in Port Lincoln. No one really knows how Tuna Toss competition began, but some people theorize that Tuna Toss competition was held for the reason that people in Port Lincoln make bluefin tuna as the source of their income. This Tuna Toss competition attracting more than 25,000 people annually cannot be found in anywhere else other than Port Lincoln. Nowadays, a kind of world championship Tuna Toss competition participated by people around the world is held, and it did create a world record of the farthest tuna-tossing with the length more than 37 meters.

Still, Tunarama Festival is not all about world championship of Tuna Toss competition. Some people attend this festival to shop or look around a number of stalls selling food, souvenirs, arts, paintings, or showing attractions. Moreover, a kind of parade where people wear penguin, fish, and the other sea creatures costumes takes place at noon while some tasty cuisines and wine are available at night. This glorious atmosphere of the festival is enhanced by several citizens competitions including tug-of-war, wheat tossing, and pole climbing.

Surprisingly, no entrance fee is required for the visitors to observe the festival. The festival is completely funded by sponsors, tourism bodies and donations from the businessmen and the other volunteers. The same as Cheese Rolling festival in UK or Running of the Bull festival in Spain, Tunarama Festival is well-maintained by the local villagers for decades so that they disagree to capitalize the festival.
